Hilarious Harry’s THIS WEEK IN SPORTS! – 1/27/12

Welcome to Hilarious Harry’s THIS WEEK IN SPORTS!

It’s been a pretty slow sports week, with the NFL taking a break before the Super Bowl – no, the Pro Bowl doesn’t count – and baseball still out of action for a while. However, they aren’t paying me to complain about slow news weeks, they’re paying me to bring you sports! And so I shall!

Without further ado, here’s THIS WEEK IN SPORTS!

The biggest sports story of the week was the acquisition of Prince Fielder by the Detroit Tigers. On Thrusday, the lefty first-baseman was introduced to the Detroit media after signing the fourth-largest contract in baseball history: $214 million for nine-years. After losing Victor Martinez to a torn ACL earlier this month, Detroit filled the need for a power hitter, adding Fielder to a stable that already contains Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander. On defense, Cabrera will move to third base, while Fielder mans first. The move rockets the Tigers into the role of  favorites for repeating their AL Central division victory.

To NFL news, following our column last week about the unrest in Indianapolis over Payton Manning‘s future, the star QB and Colts owner Jim Irsay have had a war of words across the media. The Colts have until March 8 to decide whether to pay Manning a $28 million option or let him become a free agent. On Monday, Manning described the difficult climate in the Colts practice facilities while coaches and staff were fired. Many viewed these statements as a shot at Irsay for cleaning house by letting go of many of Manning’s trusted coordinators and staff. Irsay responded to these comments by calling Manning a politician, criticizing Manning for taking his comments to the public. This back and forth does not bode well for Indianapolis, with only a few remaining weeks to make a critical decision regarding the future of the franchise, many Colts fans hope that both Manning and Irsay will keep their squawking from the newspapers and save it for the board room.

During last week’s podcast episode, we discussed Kyle Williams – the poor San Francisco returner who fumbled in two critical moments of last weekend’s playoff game against the Giants. Many San Francisco fans directed their anger and disappointment at Williams, but one young fan had another reaction – sympathy. Seven-year-old Owen Shure wrote a pep-talk letter to Williams after watching the game, reminding us all that even the players are human and need some encouragement. No word on whether Williams has received the letter – chances are he’s avoiding all communications for a while – but Shure’s story was featured on many different media outlets. Check out the letter below:

Derar Mr. Williams,

We just watched the playoff game I feel really bad for you but I wanted to tell you that you had a great season. you sould be very proud, so I wanted to say thank you

I am your #1 FAN!

Don’t call it a comeback yet! As of this writing, Tiger Woods is just 2 back from the leader after 2 rounds in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. While the tournament is part of the European Tour and not the PGA, golf fans are still waiting for Woods to turn the corner and get back to his winning ways following his public collapse and scandal a few years ago. Woods hopes to build on his recent success after he finished third in the Australian Open, and won the Chevron Challenge in December.

What to Watch this Week:
All eyes in the tennis world are on the Australian Open Championships this weekend. Saturday, the women’s final kicks off between Victoria Azarenka(3) and Maria Sharapova(4). The winner of this match will be the new #1 womens singles player in the world. Sunday, Novak Djokovic (1) faces off against Rafael Nadal (2) in the men’s singles championship.

Sports Clip of the Week:

After all this bad press in Indy, I’m sure their mascot would love to vent some frustration. Guy has serious anger management issues:

I Miss Baseball:

That’s this week in sports! Until next time: I’m outttttta here!
